It’s a rare play indeed that stages Macbeth’s death on stage, although I have seen one where those that enter circle around the dead body of Macbeth while Macduff “cuts” his head off. But Macduff must leave the stage to get the prop severed head of Macbeth that he’s going to come back on stage with. The “retreat” is not Macduff retreating, ie exiting from the stage, but rather a sound cue, as is the flourish. Enter with Drumme and Colours, Malcolme, Seyward, Rosse, Thanes, & Soldiers. Alarums.”Īt the top of the right column, it says, “Enter fighting, and Macbeth slaine.” In the Folio, on the bottom of the left column, it says “Exeunt fighting. Note also the rarely followed stage directions: Of the three times I played this, my favorite staging was when I sat down dejectedly on “I’ll not fight with thee.”, listened to macduffs ensuing lines, waited the 6 beats looking down, then raised my head and ominously spoke the awful four syllables “I.”, rose to my feet like a giant warrior arising from the earth, and delivered Macbeth’s final 7 lines. I would suggest the 3 beats missing from Macduff’s line gives that actor a moment to be smug or self-assured(he was, after all, losing the sword fight up till now).Īnd the actor playing Macbeth has to decide where to put his 6 missing beats- it made sense for me to put them before he speaks, using the break to weigh the pros and cons and ultimately deciding to fight to certain death. Probably not a shared line (11 syllables, and “yeeld” is definitely stressed, so it’s not a feminine ending) (Is there any worse epithet for a soldier to be called?”) ![]() (When I played him, I literally staggered downstage and could hear whispers of “Ceasarian section” in the audience. Macbeth (and the audience) need a moment (6 beats in fact) to understand the import of those words. Note the shared line Macb: “.To one of woman born.” Why I work from the First Folio, and not modern editions: There are a number of other subs that discuss the various theories that someone other than the man from Stratford wrote the works attributed to William Shakespeare. Shakespeare may have been a master at murdering people with words, but as the late, great Chadwick Boseman said, "We don't do that here." Keep it civil, please.
